Recognition of foreign school certificates

School certificates obtained abroad may have to be evaluated because of the entry into apprenticeship or employment or for further education.

The School Information Center (SIZ) is responsible for checking the equivalence of foreign school-leaving qualifications.

You will be issued with a certificate after examination by the SIZ, which is attached to the foreign certificate and states which school leaving certificate corresponds to the previous education in Hamburg.

Applicants for higher education in Germany must submit their educational certificates directly to a higher education institution or of their choice. The recognition of certificates and the determination of the average grade are part of the admission procedure there. Information can be found on the website of the university of your choice.

You can find the documents you need for the equivalence check by the SIZ and information about the process, information sheets and application forms here:

You can find more information about certificate recognition and the certificate of equivalence of foreign school-leaving qualifications on the SIZ website.
