Success story of Zahra
I am 32 years old and come from Iraq. In December 2016, I moved to Hamburg with my family. Back home, I had started training to become a nurse, but I was unable to complete it because of the war. Since January 2026, I have been a certified medical assistant.
My Start in Hamburg
Because of the war, I came to Hamburg with my family in December 2016. At first, it was very difficult for me to learn the new language and get to know a new country. I didn’t know anyone here. In language courses and in groups for women and families, I then met some wonderful people who helped me. I am very grateful for that.
When my family and I were living in the initial reception centre, we got to know someone who helped us with various things and still does so today. He’s now like a member of the family.
I’m very happy in Hamburg; the city and the people are wonderful. I feel at home here. I miss my homeland, but Germany has become my second home. I’m proud that my family and I are now German citizens. At my naturalisation ceremony, I heard a phrase that I find beautiful: ‘Hamburg my harbour, Germany my home.’
My personal tip for anyone starting out
It is important to learn German and not to give up, even if it is difficult. There are many opportunities and paths to follow in Germany. If something doesn’t work out, it helps to be patient and try again. It is also important to ask questions; that way, you can learn a lot from other people and get help.
My path to the job: How the HWC made it easier for me to get started
My career path in Germany began as a client at the Jobcenter of the Hamburg Welcome Center (HWC). First, I learnt German. I was given the opportunity to take part in an integration course and a vocational language course, which enabled me to reach language level B2.
Another important step on my path to employment was the recognition of my school certificates. The Central Recognition Office helped me with this by referring me to the relevant authority. Through the Jobcenter, I was then able to take part in a programme that gave me an overview of what career opportunities are available and which path suits me best. I decided that I wanted to work in the healthcare sector so that I could help people who are ill. This had already been my goal back in my home country, Iraq. There, I had started training as a nurse, but was unable to complete it due to the war.
As I had already gained some experience, I was able to undertake retraining as a medical assistant (MFA). The retraining was difficult, not only because of the language, but also because I had to be there for my two children at the same time. I didn’t give up and was also very much supported by my family. My husband and children were always my greatest source of support and strength during my retraining. It’s important to me to mention that I was also greatly supported by three people from the Evangelical Lutheran Church Community of Blankenese. I am infinitely grateful for everything they did for me.
In January 2026, I successfully completed my retraining.
Today, I am very happy and proud to be working at Asklepios Clinics and that I have taken an important step towards my future!
