Integration Courses

Learn more about what integration courses offer, whether you can participate and the costs for participants.

Learn German

In integration courses specially developed for immigrants, you will learn to use the German language in everyday life. At the same time you will receive important information about your new home, Germany. Integration courses are a state-run program funded by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees ('Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge'). People who are eligible to participate in the integration course must first take a placement test. The result is used to determine the course that best fits your existing knowledge (general integration course, intensive or special course).

Each integration course consists of a language course and an orientation course. The general integration course consists of 700 teaching units (UE).

The language course (usually 600 units of 45 minutes each) teaches communicative skills at language level B1. This means that you can find your way around and communicate well in everyday life.

In the subsequent orientation course (usually 100 units of 45 minutes each), you will learn about the history, culture and political system of Germany.

Depending on the orientation of the course you are interested in, the total duration can be up to 1,000 units. People with good learning abilities can also complete the integration course as an intensive course consisting of 430 units.

Courses for special target groups are also offered:

  • Youth integration courses
  • Integration courses for parents or women
  • Integration courses with literacy
  • Remedial courses for people who have been living in Germany for a long time and who have not yet fully mastered the German language.
